How To: Write Your First Script

Write Your First Script

Hello! My latest interest is screenwriting. I would like to share a few hints I find quite useful. I am a newbie, so the following post will not be taken from the treasury of many years of experience. Just plain facts,.. Thanks for reading!

Step 1: In the Beginning

At first, use your imagination or the data you find interesting, in other words, come up with a plot. Make sure that the contents is appealing not only to you but that it will also attract your audience. You should be able to express the story in only a few sentences. For the first representation.

Find some old scripts or books that describe how the screenwriting format should look like on the page.

Get to know the basic camera directions. You can first only read about it or watch tutorial videos, but it's even better if you get to know the real deal, the live action.

Step 2: Determine the Basis

Set up the scene, think about the place where your story will develop. Maybe the action will be revealed mostly just in one place, for example, on the island or in the library. Or you will use several different scenes.

Define the genre of the movie, among the first duties.

Deliver your movie heroes. Make sure that the audience gets to know your characters. Describe how they look and what do they do professionally and in their spare time. You can reveal their way of thinking, some secrets or little cute details about them, the ones that contribute to the development of the story.

Choose the events that will lead into action. There could be one main action connected to several smaller ones. Or only one main action.*

Also choose the language that your characters use and their possible, interesting skills, like running fast, seeing the future or developing the secret formula for the magical cure.*

Include interesting music that combines with the basic idea of the scene and the words of your characters. Also choose the lightning, etc.

Step 3: Concentrate on the Main Action

Discover the details of the main action, the ones that could be crucial. Make sure that your story contains a positive tension, which will attract your audience.

Make sure that the end will be happy, unless you want to make a sequel and leave your audience in suspense. Do not think only about the plot that is interesting to you, but go for the wider scale.

Do not write the climax that will be too long.
You can use the elements of novelty in your main theme.
Special effects can be quite appealing.
Or simply, just use your imagination and go with the flow.

Remember that you will need a lot of patience and time to write the script. Be prepared for changes, maybe you'll even rewrite the text several times. Who knows?

You could also write a book and than turn it into a script. I suggest you try to write, especially if you are taking the matter seriously. In this case you won't just waste your time,...

Good luck!
